RAVENSWOOD – Williamstown used a trio of field goals including a 50 yarder to hand host Ravenswood their second straight loss, 23-7, Friday night at Flinn Field.
For the Devils, it was not a good night on offense or defense after the opening quarter.
Williamstown scored first as David Hastings capped a nine-play, 48-yard drive with a one-yard plunge. The drive began when Ravenswood attempted a fake punt option run in their own territory that was stopped short. Garret Butler drilled the PAT kick and the Yellow Jackets led 7-0 with 7:35 left in the opening quarter.
Red Devil junior Heath Burgess stopped another Yellow Jacket scoring threat by intercepting a Jake Tracewell pass in the end zone.
The Red Devils answered with a 14-play, 65-yard drive of their own as the first quarter would down. Rhys Jelich capped the march with a three-yard run off right tackle for the touchdown. Mason Carte added the PAT boot and the game was tied 7-7.
Williamstown broke the deadlock via Garret Butler's toe with a 29-yard field goal halfway through the second quarter. Butler's kick capped a six-play, 56-yard drive with 5:17 left in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets added another field goal—this one from 21 yards out—with just 10.9 seconds left in the half. Butler's kick called an eight-play, 82-yard drive. The Yellow Jackets led 13-7 at the half.
Williamstown scored again with 6:27 left in the third quarter. Gage Wix hauled in a nine-yard TD pass from Jake Tracewell to cap a 12=play, 66-yard drive. Butler's PAT kick made to 20-7.
Ravenswood answered with a long drive into Yellow Jacket territory powered by the running of Rhys Jelich. But Jelich fumbled twice at the end of the drive, losing the last one to the Jackets at the Williamstown nine.
The Yellow jackets ended the scoring with a six-play, 50-yard march started by a Beua Wasmer interception of a Health Burgess pass. Butler kicked a 50-yard field goal with 2:19 to play in the game.
On the night, Rhys Jelich carried 18 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Devon Crews added eight carries for 45 yards; Heath Burgess, three carries for 14 yards; Connor Jelich five carries for 11 yards; and Nathan Cunningham, one carry for six yards. Ravenswood totaled 35 carries for 192 yards and one touchdown.
Heath Burgess completed four of 11 passes for 54 yards with two interceptions.
Rhys Jelich had two catches for 35 yards and Patrick Watson two catches for 19 yards.
Ravenswood totaled 246 offensive yards with 12 first downs (10 via rush and two via pass) and drew eight penalty flags for 80 yards.
Dakota Watson paced the Yellow Jackets with 16 carries for 118 yards. Williamstown carried 48 times for 232 yards with one TD.
Jake Tracewell completed eight of 11 passes for 122 yards with one TD and one interception. David Hastings was the top Williamstown receiver with two catches for 59 yards.
Williamstown totaled 354 offensive yards with 18 first downs (13 via rush, four via pass and one via penalty) and drew five flags for 35 penalty yards.
Nathan Cunningham punted twice with a 38-yard per punt average. Mason Carte kicked off twice with a 38.5 yards per kickoff average.
Rhys Jelich had five kickoff returns for 142 yards (28-yard average).
Senior middle linebacker Brad Titus led the Devil defense with 15 tackles. Donavyn Estep burst onto the defensive scene with 11 tackles. Connor Jelich added nine tackles, Rhys Jelich eight, Trey Hatcher and Heath Burgess (interception) seven each, Matt Peery six, Thomas Sturm, Brett Stanley, and Ben Johnson five each, Dylan Gandee four; Devon Crews three, Kyle Hickman and Patrick Watson two each and Nathan Cunningham and John Huey one each.
Ravenswood (2-2) travels to Ritchie County Friday night to battle the Raiders (3-2) in a 7:30 p.m. game.
