RAVENSWOOD – Defending AA state champion Wayne showed why they're the team to beat again in 2012, scoring 45 first-quarter point on the way to a humbling 84-42 win at Flinn Field. The game was billed as an early season Class AA showdown. It was anything but that.
What it was, was a record-setting night for total points scored at Flinn Field and unfortunately, for points scored by an opponent.
Things began on a bad note for the Red Devils when the opening kickoff by the Pioneers fell short and no Ravenswood player made a move to recover it. James Egnor of Wayne pounced on the live ball at the Devil 32 and two plays later the Pioneers score the first of six first-quarter touchdowns on a 23-yard run by Egnor with 11:16 still left in the first quarter.
The Pioneers scored 24 points in the first four minutes of the game including recovering a Ravenswood fumble in the Devil end zone.
Down 38-0, shellshocked Ravenswood's first point came with 28 seconds left in the opening quarter on a four-yard run by junior Devon Crews. Yet the Pioneers scored again in the final seconds of the quarter on a 44-yard run by Mason Hodge. Wayne led 45-6 after one quarter.
The Pioneers called the dogs early in the second quarter, but that didn't stop the scoring onslaught. Wayne scored 19 second quarter points to Ravenswood's seven (seven yard TD run by Crews) to lead 64-13 at the half.
The Red Devils actually outscored the Pioneer reserves 29-20 in the second half but the game was basically over in the first half.
On the bright side in a dismal night, junior Devon Crews ran for 122 yards on 15 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of four, seven, 40 and 54 yards. Michael Perry completed one of two passes for 58 yards and a TD.
Wayne totaled 540 offensive yards with 16 first downs (15 via rush and one via pass) and drew four flags for 35 penalty yards.
Mason Carte kicked off seven times with a 37.14 yards per kick average.
Crews had three kickoff returns for 71 yards; Dylan Radabaugh, three for 38 yards; Ben Johnson, four for 61 yards; and Preston Humphries, one for 10 yards.

Dillon Gandee added five tackles; Matt Peery four; Donavyn Estep (TFL) and Health Burgess, three each; Rhys Jelich (fumble recovery), Patrick Watson (fumble recovery), Devon Crews, Ben Johnson, Kyle Hickman and Nathan Withers, two each; and Trey Hatcher, Connor Jelich, Mason Carte, Nathan Cunningham (TFL), Dylan Radabaugh, John Huey, Ryan Whytsell, Thomas Sturm, Drake McDowell, Roy Bush, Damien Caldwell, Kaleb Horn and Patrick Click, one tackle each.
Ravenswood (2-1) must get over the Wayne nightmare quickly. Williamstown (2-2), fresh off a 49-7 blasting of Class A No. 18 South Harrison, invades Flinn Field Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. game.
