RIPLEY - It was the home opener for Coach Jeff Merritt's Ripley Middle School football team. Ripley was coming off a tough 14-0 loss to Edison Middle School last week and hoped to rebound against a quick Logan Wildcat Middle school squad.

For the second straight game, Lane Casto got the start under center for the Vikings. Ripley's projected starter Todd Withrow was sidelined last week with an injury.

Ripley moved the ball well in the first half but had trouble scoring in the red zone. Elusive running back Elijah Riffe ran hard between the tackles and on designed sweeps for Ripley.

Logan struck paydirt first when Isiah Runion went 55 yards on a busted play to the strong side. The Wildcats ran in a 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 in the first quarter.

After a 15-0 Logan lead at the half, Ripley got into the scoring column on a beautiful 20-yard pass and catch from Lane Casto to wide receiver Hunter Stevens late in the third period.

Logan ran in another score and missed the conversion to bring the game to a close at 21-6.

"Our kids fought hard," said coach Merritt. "I'm proud of the way they kept trying to get back into the game. Lane (Casto) did another good job at quarterback. He made a nice throw on the touchdown and managed the game like we asked him to."
