  • Ripley Chief of Police Jim Fridley announced to City Council at its regular meeting last Tuesday evening that his department has received a $10,000 grant from the state for success in DUI enforcement procedures and arrests. Officer Brian Anderson was also honored for his success with a grant of $2,000. All the money is to be used for needs in the department. Fridley said that most of the money will be used to add video cameras to cars not yet equipped with them. The cameras operate any time the emergency lights are turned on. Council also passed the first reading of a water rate increase ordinance drawn up by the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson. The second reading will be in October to allow time for legal publication of the proposal and a public meeting. Mayor Carolyn Rader informed Council that Southern Jackson PSD, the water system’s biggest wholesale buyer, will protest the increase to the state Public Service Commission. That means that it will be the state PSC which sets the local water rates. The city’s accountants say the raise is necessary because the water system is not self supporting as the law requires it to be. Council also approved a paving bid from West Virginia Paving for just over $85,000 in street repairs in the city. Also to be paved is the remainder of the parking area at the west Ripley park. That facility will also receive some playground toys out of the carryover money from last fiscal year. Rader told Council of a request from a “small committee” of residents of Skyline View who wish to be annexed into the city. Superintendent Tim King says that the road would need considerable expensive upgrades to bring it up the city-street standards. No action was taken on this matter.
