Ravenswood’s Lady Red Devil soccer team is putting finishing touches on summer conditioning this week in anticipation of what they hope will be a big fall season.
Workouts have included exercise, running the nature trail and ball drills with help of J.D. Scritchfield, Debbie Scritchfield, Steve Cogar and Kim Sheets.
The Lady Red Devils lost two key starters, leading scorer and All-Stater Hannah Gurtis and exchange student Ingrid Foslund, to graduation but return everyone else in a lineup loaded with experience and talent.
Ravenswood will field a team of eight seniors who have been starters through most, if not all, of their careers, along with talented underclassmen like junior-to-be Bess McNabb, and sophomores-to-be Kayla Scritchfield, Natalie Cogar, Amber Hannum, Kendra Vaughn and Charity Martinez. Bess McNabb, in particular, had a breakout 2011 season on the wing in both scoring and assists.
Incoming freshman talent is yet to join the squad.
The anticipated return of speedy senior Erica Cullen from injury with her knack for scoring could help push the Lady Red Devils to the next level. Also among the seniors, Alex McNabb is a physical enforcer in the midfield and defensive specialists Jordan Sheets, Jordan Danko, Marta Corbin and Alex Vaughn can be suffocating for opposing offenses.
Kassie Johnson is an experienced wing player with her own knack for scoring goals.
At goalkeeper, senior Anna Flesher is poised for a super final year. She already has 392 career saves to her credit and posted seven shut-out games in 2011. Newcomer sophomore-to-be Kindsey Torris is working at keeper as well.
“This is a really good group of girls,” said J.D. Scritchfied. “They work hard. They get along and they’re versatile. This could be a really big year for them.”
