  • There will be a Jackson County presence once again this year in the annual WCHS-TV/FOX 11 North-South All-Star Football Classic. Some of the state’s top 74 senior football players from the 2011 season will suit up in the contest that is set for Saturday, June 16 at UC Stadium in Charleston.
Ravenswood’s Class AA First Team All-Stater Jeremy Lawrence, a running back, defensive back and return man, will be one of the North’s 37 players. Lawrence, who starred on Dick Sturm’s final Red Devil teams, is heading to West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon where he will continue his football career.
David Hicks, a Class AAA First Team All-State player for the Ripley Vikings, was chosen for the game but unfortunately won’t get to play due to a recent surgery. Hicks was a standout running back, linebacker and defensive end during his days for Jimmy Frashier’s crew.
Since the classic’s rebirth in 1976, Jackson County has been represented in all but three games.
Four head coaches from Jackson County have served as the top leaders in the annual Classic. Ravenswood’s Fred Taylor led the South Cardinals in the 1988 contest. Ripley’s Frank Marino was the head coach of the North Bears in the 1990 showdown. The past two years Frashier and Sturm were the head coaches for the North.
From 1976-1989, Jackson County players were a part of the South. Restructuring of the boundaries due to consolidation around the state shifted Ravenswood and Ripley to the North starting with the 1990 contest that had Marino as the head coach.
Four Jackson County players have garnered North Most Valuable Player honors in the game – Ravenswood’s Ryan Ward and Chip Donohoe in 1996 and 1997, respectively, along with Ripley’s Jeff McCoy in 2003 and Parker Deem in 2006.
