  • On a day that Dario Franchitti won the Indy 500 and Kasey Kahne was racing to victory in the Coca-Cola 600, Evans resident Chris Garnes was pulling off a stunner on the I-77 Raceway Park oval at the Fairplain exit near Ripley.
Garnes, who turned 25 years old on May 23, captured what is being called “one of the biggest upsets in World of Outlaws Late Model Series history” by taking the checkered flag in the 50-lap “Ripley Racefest” A -Main on Sunday evening. It marked the first-time ever that the local track had hosted a World of Outlaws event and Garnes dominated a field filled with touring stars.
Garnes, who has won the Late Model points title the past two years at the local track, which has undergone a major renovation, started from the outside pole. He becomes the 46th driver to win a World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main race since the circuit was reorganized under the World Racing Group in 2004.
The win earned Garnes a career-high payoff of $10,550.
