On June 8 Ravenswood Red Devil quarterback Dustin DeRito will lace up the spikes one last time when he takes the field for the West Virginia team in the 19th Annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Football Classic. The game pits West Virginia against Ohio players as all proceeds benefit a worthy charity.
The first team All LKC and Special Honorable Mention All State selection cherishes the opportunity to take the field one last time and represent West Virginia and the old red and black.
“It’s an honor to be selected to play in this game. It’s for a great cause and I’m excited to suit up with some of the players that I have played against in my high school career. It should be a lot of fun,” said DeRito.
The athletic quarterback rushed for 987 yards and threw for another 1,035 his senior season at Ravenswood.
“I have already put a bug in coach (Mike) Dawson’s ear about running the double barrel with (Jeremy) Lawrence, (Kyle) Griffith and myself,” added DerRito.
Dawson is the head coach at Richie County High and will lead the West Virginia squad.
Six Red Devils were selected for the pigskin showdown. Chad Burrows, Zack Martin and Brandon Cunningham will also be featured. Ravenswood tied Parkersburg for the most players chosen with six.
Derito will attend West Virginia University-Parkersburg this fall to study science before entering pharmacy school in Morgantown down the road.
“My family is crazy about football. I will have a lot of family members and friends at the game. I want to perform well and enjoy the moment.”
