On May 5, The Ripley Middle softball team traveled to Winfield to take on the Lady Generals. Through the first four innings, Petersen dominated the Generals as she pounded the strike zone posting four scoreless. Unfortunately for the Lady Vikings (7-8), the Generals hurler was matching Petersen strike for strike. Finally, in the top of the 5th Ripley broke through with a lead off single by Hinzman and an RBI by Moore.
The Vikings celebration was shorted lived as the Generals forged ahead in the bottom of the fifth plating two runs. In the top of the seventh, facing elimination, the Lady Vikes proved they were not going down without a fight. Leading off the seventh, Delanie Parsons smashed a double to the fence in left to put Ripley in a position to tie it up.
Paige Swisher followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Parsons to third. Darby Petersen’s ground out sent Parsons home sliding safely under the tag. The Lady Vikes had knotted the game at two apiece. After holding the Generals scoreless in the bottom of the frame, the Lady Vikes were in uncharted waters tasting extra innings for the first time of the season. Unable to score in the top of the eighth, the Generals seized the chance in the bottom half. After being plunked on the foot, the Generals lead-off hitter moved around to third. With one out, the Generals pitcher laid down a bunt bringing home the third and decisive run for the Generals. “I am extremely proud of these girls. They have nothing to be ashamed of. We played hard and pushed Winfield to the limit! We came up a little short, but we went down swinging. These girls came to Winfield knowing we had lost to them twice. Our eighth graders had spent the last two days on the DC trip and didn’t get home until early Saturday morning.
They could have thrown in the towel and quit but they didn’t. It’s been a good season and the girls have improved tremendously. I believe the future of Ripley softball is very bright,” said coach Swisher after the game.
Darby Petersen hurled eight innings and surrendered three hits, two walks and three earned runs.
At the plate: Kelsey Moore single and two RBIs, Allie Hamilton, double and single, Heather Brotherton, double, Maddie Hinzman, single, Delanie Parsons, single and Paige Swisher, sacrifice bunt.
