Fresh off their Class AAA Region 3 championship at Lewis County, Coach Jason Scott’s #2-ranked Ripley Vikings are in Huntington today (Thursday) to begin their quest for the 2010 state wrestling championship against the state’s best wrestlers including the #1-ranked Parkersburg South Patriots who they have chased all season.

The Vikings crowned seven regional champions who will be “Top Four” seeds in their respective weight classes and will be represented in 13 of the 14 weight classes at the state tournament this weekend (February 25-27). Ripley also qualified two regional runners-up, two regional third placers and two regional fourth placers.

Parkersburg South also qualified 13 of 14 wrestlers—seven champions, four runners-up, one third-placer and one-fourth placer.

The Vikings and Patriots top the AAA field in number of qualifiers with 13 each.

“The kids have wrestled really well the past month and set themselves for a legitimate chance to win the state championship at the regional,” said Coach Scott. “They’re motivated and excited for the opportunity. We plan to represent Ripley High School well and hope to see a lot of fans in Huntington cheering the kids on Friday and Saturday. We’ve told them if they do their jobs individually and win the matches they should win, the team thing will happen.”

The seedings pill for the state tournament put five of Ripley’s seven regional champions in the opposite half of their individual weight class brackets from the Region 1 champions from South.
