Ravenswood’s Red Devilettes unleashed a record-setting three-point rain of fire Tuesday night at Roane County High School that torched Pt. Pleasant in the opening game of the Class AA Region 1, Section 2 Tournament. When the smoke had cleared, the #4-ranked Devilettes had incinerated the Lady Knights 69-27 to advance to Friday night’s sectional championship game.

Coach Chris Michael’s gals set the nets ablaze with a school record 14 three-point goals—one more than the previous mark (13) set in 2009. Freshman Taylor Youell drained the record breaker in the fourth quarter to cap the arc angels’ fire and brimstone from beyond the arc.

Before Youell’s bomb swished, senior Rebekah Samples had drilled in a team-leading seven treys (the most in any Devilette game this season) in just about three quarters of play, game high-scorer Emily Rector five and sophomore Hannah Gurtis one. The Devilettes were literally on fire from beyond the arc, draining 14 of 20 trey attempts for 70%. Ravenswood shot 46% overall from the floor, hitting 25 of 54 shots.

Rector’s 25 points topped the game scoring and Samples sizzled in 21 on her seven treys. Freshman Hannah Murray posted an outstanding overall game with nine points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three blocked shots. Gurtis chipped in five points, Youell three and Sarah McMillan, Makala Settlage and Brenna Mahan two each.

Ravenswood grabbed a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game on successive treys by Samples, Rector and Samples. They went on to take a 12-6 scoring margin to end the first quarter up 21-6. They upped their lead to 40-8 at the half with an even more dominant 19-2 second quarter.

Pt. Pleasant actually outscored the Devilettes in the third canto, 16-11, but the lead was still insurmountable at 51-18. Ravenswood then polished off the wildfire win with a 18-9 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to wrap up the 42-point blowout.

Ashley Templeton paced the Knights (7-16) with 10 points. Andrea Porter added eight, Katie Brunner four, Kohle Slone and Amanda Roush two each and Elizabeth Livingston one.

Rector added six assists and Samples two for a total of 20 versus just six total turnovers. Rector notched three steals and Samples, Nicole Sadecky and Sarah McMillan one each. Sadecky and Samples grabbed four rebounds each. McMillan had two blocks.

“I’m really proud of them,” said Coach Michael. “Our intensity and energy was at a high level from the start. We came out and played like a top-ranked team should. I thought we played very well defensively in the first half. And at the end with our reserves in there, we were still playing very hard. We shot lights out from the three for a new school record and we had 20 assists to just six turnovers. That’s outstanding.”

Now 15-5, Ravenswood faces Ritchie County (11-9) in Friday’s sectional championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Roane County High. The sectional champion will win home-court advantage for next week’s Region 1 championship games, but both teams will advance to the regional games. The Section 2 champion will host the Section 1 runner-up. The Section 2 runner-up must travel to play on the Section 1 champion’s home court.

The Region 1 championship games will be played next Thursday at 7 p.m. The two regional winners make the Class AA “Elite Eight” field for the West Virginia State Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum, beginning March 10.
