Ravenswood’s Red Devilettes let one slip through their fingers Tuesday evening at Roane County, missing several shots in the final moments and scoring just five fourth-quarter points to fall in an upset to the Lady Raiders (7-6) 47-44.

Coach Chris Michael’s gals (now 9-4) trailed big early as the physical Raiders knocked down their shots, but clawed back into the game to trail 16-10 at the end of the first quarter. They then fell behind 21-10 as Roane went on a 5-0 run to open the second quarter.

But Ravenswood then awoke to go on a 9-0 run of their own to trim the Raider lead to just two at 21-19 with 5:19 left in the second quarter. The Devilettes managed a slim 7-6 scoring advantage the rest of the way (16-11 for the quarter) to trail just 27-26 at the half. A missed shot at the buzzer would have given them the lead.

The Devilettes opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run on a trey by senior Rebekah Samples and a deuce by junior Nicole Sadecky to grab the lead at 31-27.

Roane answered with a 7-4 run before Ravenswood went back up 35-34 on a putback by freshman Hannah Murray. Hannah Gurtis converted a driving shot at the buzzer to put the Dev-
lettes up 39-37 as the third quarter ended. Ravenswood battled to a 13-10 scoring margin for the quarter.

Roane grabbed the lead for good at 41-39 with a pair of free throws with 4:57 left in the game and ran off a 6-2 (Ravenswood’s deuce on a shot by Sarah McMillan) scoring run in the next four minutes to lead 47-41 as the Devilettes missed shot after shot after shot.

Samples finally drained a trey to cut the Raider lead to 47-44 with 9.1 seconds left and got a chance to tie the game off a Makala Settlage steal and kick out to the arc. Samples’ trey try rimmed out and Roane grabbed the rebound.

Settlage again stole the ball at mid-court and flipped it to Emily Rector who tried to throw up a desperation shot as the final buzzer sounded.

Samples led the Devilettes with a game-high 16 points including four treys and Murray added 14. Emily Rector chipped in six points on an off-shooting and roughed-up night. Gurtis added four points and Nicole Sadecky and Sarah McMillan two each.

Taylor Bradley (three treys) paced the Raiders with 12 points and knocked down a pair of free throws late to nail down the upset win. Clarissa Pinson added 11 points, Kate Williams nine, Brooklyn Pavalok eight, and Becky Fruye seven.

Ravenswood shot 33% (19 of 57) from the floor, just 21% from three-point range hitting just three of 14 long-range shots, and swished only two of eight free throw opportunities.

McMillan led the Devilette carom crops with five rebounds (team total of 26). Murray had four blocked shots and McMillan two. Samples dished off five of her team’s 10 assists. Rector notched three of the Devilettes’ 11 steals. Ravenswood committed 11 turnovers.

“Basketball is a humbling game,” said Coach Michael in the aftermath. “We had our chances, but we didn’t make our shots.”

The Devilettes host unbeaten Class A #2-ranked St. Marys tonight (Thursday) and Wirt County on Saturday night.
