After questioning him at Jackson County Sheriff’s Department headquarters in Ripley Friday, Spencer Police Department officers arrested a Letart man and charged him with first degree murder in the beating death of a Spencer resident.

Greg Duane Leach, 20, has been charged with murder in the death of Kenneth G. Boggs, 44, of Spencer. Boggs was found beaten to death at his Spencer home Wednesday morning at around 8:41 a.m., after Leach himself allegedly placed a call to 9-1-1 requesting assistance for an unresponsive male at Boggs’ residence.

Sgt. John Caldwell and Patrolman Nathan Harper of the Spencer Police Department, who are investigating the case, were contacted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Todd Roberts after an anonymous call from a female was received in Ripley that individuals wanted to come in and provide information about a crime that occurred in Spencer.

Caldwell said he and Deputy Bo Williams of the Roane County Sheriff’s Department came to Ripley and interviewed Leach and a female at Jackson County Sheriff’s Department headquarters.

Subsequent to the interviews, Leach was arrested and charged with first degree murder.

Caldwell said the victim, Kenneth G. Boggs, 44, was beaten to death at his residence. Caldwell said the victim and the accused murderer were acquaintances and that anger appeared to be involved in the crime. Boggs was allegedly beaten several times by Leach before expiring. “He (Leach) went back several times,” Caldwell said.

Leach is lodged in the South Central Regional Jail pending further court action.
