Vesta C. Pickens, 99, of Sandyville passed away Friday, January 22, 2010, at Ravenswood Village following an extended illness.


Vesta C. Pickens, 99, of Sandyville passed away Friday, January 22, 2010, at Ravenswood Village following an extended illness.

She was born July 25, 1910, in Jackson County, a daughter of the late John and Bertha Smith Maddox. A Methodist by faith, she was a lifelong homemaker and active with the Sandyville Senior Center where she was known as a fierce competitor at dominoes.

Surviving are sons Charles Pickens (Carol) of Washington, WV, and Dennis Pickens (Mamie) of Sandyville; daughters Sharon Staats (Jim) of Sandyville and Susan Dowell (Gary) of Versailles, KY, a granddaughter raised by Vesta as her own. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren behind.

In addition to her parents, Vesta was preceded in death by her first husband Roy Enoch, her second husband Gus Pickens, daughters Loretta Jean Enoch Pursley and Norma Enoch Miller, and grandson Dennis Miller.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2010, at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Pastor Robert Kniley officiating. Interment followed at Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley.
