On Sunday, July 26, 2009, after a 17-month battle with lung cancer, Shirley Ann Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and close friends.

She was born March 31, 1936, in Kinmundy, IL, to Chris and Blance Jasper.  She graduated high school in 1954 in Kinmundy.  She married Glen Drewes that year and they later divorced.  She married Lester “Dick” Smith and they adopted a son, Chris.  They divorced in 1978.

After moving to Ripley in 1962, she started working for Dr. Edward Smith, DDS, as a dental assistant where she continued for 45 years, only being forced to quit because of her illness.

She dearly loved her family, especially her grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Her beloved grandson was killed in a tragic accident in 2007, and soon after that she was diagnosed with cancer.

She was a most gracious person and would give anything she owned to anyone who was in need.

She dearly loved dogs and supported the Humane Society.  It broke her heart when she could no longer care for her beloved pet “Miss Sue.”

Shirley was loved by everyone she ever met.  She always found something good in every person and never had a mean thing to say about people.  She loved going to Myrtle Beach on vacation and had many friends there as well.  She had spent several months there recuperating from her illness with her dear friends Christine and Steve Jordan.  She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by son Chris (Tracy) Smith of Marana, AZ; grandchild Megan Smith; great-grandchildren Carter Crihfield, Cameron Crihfield and Dominic McVay, all of Ravenswood; brother Kenneth L. (Karen) Jasper of Three Rivers, MI; nephews John (Debbie) Jasper of Braidwood, IL, Tom (Fran) Jasper of Channahon, IL, Ted Jasper of Braidwood, IL, Ken Jasper, Jr., of Belleville, IL; niece Tina Jasper of Three Rivers, MI; many great nieces and nephews; and special friends Collene Murray and Regina Hayes of Ripley and Christine and Steve Jordan of Myrtle Beach.

She was preceded in death by father Chris Henry Jasper, mother Blanche Lillian Jasper, brother Charles Eugene Jasper, grandson Lars Smith, an infant son and infant brother Willie Jasper.

A memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at the Ripley Baptist Temple, 320 Charleston Dr., Ripley, with Pastor Rick Perrine officiating.  Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to hospice of the Humane Society.
